Review: Royal Holiday by Jasmine Guillory

Royal Holiday held a lot of promise for me – an older heroine, working with the fictional equivalent of Meghan Markle, making a long-distance vacation fling work. It just didn’t work for me.

Royal Holiday CoverVivian Forest has been out of the country a grand total of one time, so when she gets the chance to tag along on her daughter Maddie’s work trip to England to style a royal family member, she can’t refuse. She’s excited to spend the holidays taking in the magnificent British sights, but what she doesn’t expect is to become instantly attracted to a certain private secretary, his charming accent, and unyielding formality.

Malcolm Hudson has worked for the Queen for years and has never given a personal, private tour—until now. He is intrigued by Vivian the moment he meets her and finds himself making excuses just to spend time with her. When flirtatious banter turns into a kiss under the mistletoe, things snowball into a full-on fling.

Despite a ticking timer on their holiday romance, they are completely fine with ending their short, steamy affair come New Year’s Day… or are they? (Goodreads) Goodreads

I received an eARC of Royal Holiday via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I’ve really enjoyed all of the other Guillory books I’ve read but this story just fell flat for me on a number of levels.

I really liked Vivian as a main character, but I honestly never got the romance with Malcolm. He held back so, so much that it felt like he was barely a part of the romance. When he was part of it, he was being a massive jerk – either to his nephew, to Vivian, or to them both. Every time he fought with his nephew, Vivian was the one that fixed it by telling him to stop being a jerk and using all of her work skills to make him come out of his shell.

It was great seeing Maddie thrive in her personal life and career after spending the last book with her. I did really enjoy the tour of London and how real that felt because it made me feel like part of the vacation alongside Vivian.

You might like this more than I did, but it didn’t work for me. If you want to give it a shot, you can pick it up on Indiebound, Amazon or The Book Depository through our affiliate links.
