Review: Not Another Family Wedding by Jackie Lau

Jackie Lau is back with her heartfelt and romantic stories. What I adored the most about Not Another Family Wedding was how it focused on the heroines, Natalie, and gave her a Happily Ever After without trying to change her.

Natalie Chin-Williams might be a cranky professor of climatology who thinks the world is doomed, but she believes in lasting love…just not for herself. She has a long history of failed relationships, plus the men she dates inevitably want children and she doesn’t.

Now thirty-six and single, Natalie expects endless comments about her love life when she attends her baby sister’s wedding. Worse, weddings are always drama-filled disasters in her family. She needs emotional support to get through the weekend, so she enlists the help of her friend Connor Douglas, the dependable family doctor.

The wedding reception goes south when a drunk aunt announces a family secret that sends Natalie reeling and shakes her faith in love. Luckily, she has her long-time friend to lean on—a man she somehow ends up kissing. But there’s no way this could turn into anything lasting, is there? That’s impossible for her, especially now…Goodreads

I received an ARC of Not Another Family Wedding from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Natalie is 36, single, a bit of a pessimist and is tired of people asking her when she’ll get married, have children, etc. Natalie has no interest in having children, which is, of course, valid.Of course, thanks to the upcoming wedding of her baby sister Rebecca, Natalie needs reinforcements to help her survive the weekend. thankfully she has her friend Connor, of sixteen years, there to help. What I adored about their romance is how the quiet transition from friends-to-lovers happened. Connor was very much immersed into making Natalie feel better whenever a callous family member hits her with those insufferable questions.

I felt as frustrated as Natalie because at 23, I don’t want children either. I liked that Natalie got to tell her story of why she feels that way and I loved her honesty and how she doesn’t want to change her mind. A heroine who knows what she wants and goes for it is exactly what you’ll find in Natalie.

However, that doesn’t mean that people have respected her wishes. Mentions of a past relationship that made Natalie feel guilt over her decision is discussed a lot in the book which might trigger anyone who has experienced manipulation by a partner who wouldn’t respect their wishes.

What I also liked was how the book dealt with an incredibly sensitive topic, such as a woman’s choice not to have children, while also respecting other women’s right and choice to have children and be stay-at-home moms. At one point, Natalie finds out her sister Rebecca wants that and she makes the mistake of forcing her own ideals on Rebecca. I liked that the sisters fought despite the age gap. I liked that the book portrayed a biracial family that’s full of problems but stuck together.

The shining moments for me were those between Connor and Natalie where they’d have a good time and their friendship glowed from the page.

Also, moments with Ngin Ngin, Natalie’s Chinese paternal grandmother. She was everything. She was traditional in her love, ideas, and cooking, but she was a refreshing supportive grandmother who listened when Natalie told her about her wish and respected it. Ngin Ngin also ripped into Iris’ “drug” habit (of smoking weed) and those scenes were so freaking hilarious to me.

I also loved how Natalie stuck by her brother Seth and his husband Simon whenever the homophobic part of the family would show up. It gave me hope that even if a family has disapproving members, that doesn’t mean that marginalized members of the family would be attacked. Also, Simon and Seth’s banter was Grade A which made me low-key want their story…

Not Another Family Wedding delivers on all aspects of family, friends-to-lovers and a fantastic heroine. It was a 5 star read for me and I bet it’ll be for you too. You can pick up a copy on Amazon!
