Castle Alums return to ABC TV screens – separately

Television

Castle fans will find familiar faces both on and behind the television screen on ABC this fall with cop dramas. However, they won’t be working together. ABC ordered a full season for both shows from their pilots.

Castle was a light-hearted cop drama starring Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic. It ran for 8 seasons before its cancellation after the network announced that Stana Katic would not be returning if it continued.

The Rookie, which will star Nathan Fillion and be written and executive produced by former Castle executive producer/co-showrunner Alexi Hawley, is based off of a true story.

Starting over isn’t easy, especially for small town guy John Nolan who, after a life-altering incident, is pursuing his dream of being an LAPD officer. As the force’s oldest rookie, he’s met with skepticism from some higher-ups who see him as just a walking midlife crisis. If he can’t keep up with the young cops and the criminals, he’ll be risking lives including his own. But if he can use his life experience, determination and sense of humor to give him an edge, he may just become a success in this new chapter of his life.

The Rookie will also star Melissa O’Neil as fellow rookie cop Lucy Chen, along with training officers Eric Winter and Afton Williamson. I’m excited to see two women of color as part of the main cast.

Take Two will be a familiar storyline to Castle fans, with a familiar show-running team. Married couple Terri Edda Miller and Andrew W. Marlowe, who developed Castle from the beginning, will be the executive producers and show runners.

Sam Swift (Rachel Bilson), the former star of a hit cop series is fresh-out-of-rehab following a bender of epic proportions. Desperate to restart her career, she talks her way into shadowing rough-and-tumble private investigator Eddie Valetik (Eddie Cibrian) as research for a potential comeback role. Though lone wolf Eddie resents the babysitting gig, high-spirited Sam proves herself to be surprisingly valuable, drawing on her acting skills and 200 episodes of playing a detective.

Other former Castle alum Stana Katic plays FBI agent Emily Byrne in Absentia, which is a 10 episode mini-series on Amazon.

Neither of the new shows has an official premiere date yet. That being said, I expect them to begin on ABC in the fall.

As an avid Castle fanI’m interested to see if the problems that plagued Hawley’s seasons of Castle will be found in The Rookie. I’m more than willing to give both shows a shot this fall! What do you think?
